Baldwin boys take 4A title in cross country

? Baldwin High’s boys cross country team convincingly won the Class 4A state championship Saturday at Wamego Country Club by placing five runners in the top 16.

Junior George Letner led the Bulldogs with a 5,000-meter time of 16:42.4. Joe Pierce, Dakota Helm, Zach Smith and Nevin Dunn rounded out Baldwin’s tight pack up front, which had only a 30-second gap between runners No. 1 through No. 5.

Baldwin won the meet with 41 points, beating out runner-up Clay Center Community High by 67 points. De Soto earned a fourth-place finish with 124 points, while Ottawa came in 12th with 251.

The BHS girls squad placed third overall, finishing four points behind runner-up Paola. Trinity Academy ran away with the team title.

Junior Addie Dick was the front-runner for the Bulldogs, clocking in at 16:00.0 for 4,000-meters for 12th place.

Two area freshmen placed in the top 10, with Santa Fe Trail’s Hannah Honeymoon finishing sixth and De Soto’s Gabby Collins taking eighth.

Tonganoxie High placed fourth and De Soto sixth overall.
