25 years ago: Officers ensure a quiet night at Stull cemetery

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 1, 1989:

Guarded by a pair of Douglas County sheriff’s officers, the little pioneer cemetery at Stull, west of Lawrence, had been undisturbed by thrill-seekers overnight. Only a few cars had visited the cemetery, Douglas County Sheriff Loren Anderson said, and the people had soon left after learning that officers were on hand. Area residents hoped crowds of “devil-seekers” would never return to the site, which had been established in 1859 and had gained a reputation in recent years for being haunted or being a “gateway to hell,” a place visited by the devil on Halloween night. Continuing vandalism at the site had the cemetery board considering tearing down the 132-year-old church on the property, which had been vacant for about 30 years.
