Topeka ? Business is apparently good for the planned new School of Business building at Kansas University.

KU is requesting an expansion of the project before construction even starts.

That request will be made to a committee of the Kansas Board of Regents on Thursday.

The four-story building to be built across Naismith Drive from Allen Fieldhouse was originally pegged at approximately $65.7 million.

But the School of Business is growing faster than originally projected, according to a memo written by regents staff.

“This has led to an increased need for faculty and staff offices as well as a need for more teaching space. The building is at a point in the design stage that it would be advantageous to plan for an expansion,” the memo says.

The estimated cost of the addition is $6.8 million, bringing the new price tag to about $72.5 million. KU is seeking additional private funds for the expansion.

The project will be funded with $62.5 million in private funds and $10 million in university funds.

School officials say the bid package for the piers and foundation work will be ready for bidding by the end of June.

In May, KU announced the building will be named Capitol Federal Hall after the Capitol Federal Foundation, which has donated $20 million to the building’s construction.

The building is expected to be completed in time for the 2016-17 academic year.
