De Soto edges Tongie in 7th in state baseball opener

? De Soto High rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, capping an 8-7 Class 4A-Div. I state quarterfinal baseball victory against Tonganoxie on Thursday at Dean Evans Stadium.

“The whole season, our mantra has kind of been resiliency,” said De Soto coach Joel Thaemert, whose Wildcat squad (18-4) also won two one-run games in its regional tournament. “We’ve been in games like this all year — not quite to that extent — but we’ve had close games throughout the season. These guys just battle and battle, and they believe.”

The loss marks the end of a historic season for Tonganoxie, in which the Chieftains (15-8) tallied their most wins in five years and earned their first state bid since 1992.

“It’s been incredible,” THS coach Mitch Loomis said. “This team, on paper, doesn’t look as good as all the other teams, but we found ways to win. We just showed we belong with the best teams in the state. I was proud of our kids.”
