100 years ago: Seventh Street to be widened for streetcar turnaround

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 29, 1914:

  • “Work will begin next week to widen 7th street between Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Five feet will be taken off the sidewalk on each side and put into the street. The telephone poles have already been set back five feet so as to be on the edge of the sidewalk when it is moved. The street is being widened on account of the turn of the street cars in front of the Eldridge Hotel. In making the turn the end of the car swings around so as to nearly obstruct the street, and allows insufficient room for the passing of vehicles. It has therefore been determined to widen the street for the one block east from Massachusetts. A. R. Young and Company has the contract and work will be begun next week.”
  • “The city commission had a very quiet session this morning. No further appointments were brought up and only routine business was transacted. The matter of lights for South park was discussed and referred to the mayor with power to act. The mayor has already recommended eight 100-watt lights or their equivalent. It may be that in place of the eight large lights a larger number of smaller lights will be provided. The eight large lights will cost approximately $20 a month if used all night, or $10 a month if put on the midnight circuit. Two 100-watt lights were also recommended for Pinckney park… The commissioners stated that there had been some complaint about unnecessary work being done on Sunday, and an investigation will be made.”
  • “The senior commencement invitations of the University are being given out today. They are very attractive this year, being bound in a leather cover upon which is stamped the class numerals in gold. They contain attractive cuts of Fraser Hall and a corner of Fowler shops.”
  • “Tomorrow morning will be spent in the cemetery where the graves of the old soldiers will be decorated and where flowers will be strewn on the last resting place of loved ones…. ‘All automobile owners who can possible do so are asked to meet at the court house at 9:30 o’clock tomorrow morning, to help take the old soldiers to the cemetery. Here is a way in which to demonstrate your patriotism in a practical way. Will you not be on hand with your auto tomorrow at 9:30? O.E. Perkins, Lawrence Auto Assn.'”
  • “The county offices at the court house will enjoy a holiday tomorrow. All of the offices will be closed all day, and the officers will help celebrate Memorial Day…. All the clothing stores will be open all day tomorrow.”
