A unique street performance event again has won the necessary approvals to operate in downtown Lawrence this summer.
Lawrence city commissioners at their weekly meeting Tuesday unanimously agreed to grant the necessary right-of-way permits to the Lawrence Busker Fest to operate Aug. 22 through 24 in downtown.
The event — which in the past has featured everything from fire-eaters to hula-hoop performers — will close the 100 block of East Seventh Street and the 100 block of East Eighth Street during large portions of Aug 22 through 24. The event also will close the parking and sidewalk area in front of US Bank in the 900 block of Massachusetts Street during the three-day event.
In other business, commissioners also unanimously rejected a request for a development code change that would have opened the door for outdoor fun centers to be located in neighborhood-oriented shopping centers. Several neighbors near Clinton Parkway and Inverness Drive had opposed the change after a fun center was proposed for vacant property in their neighborhood. That proposal has since been withdrawn by the developer.
