Two dozen still without power after morning outages in Douglas County

The majority of customers affected by a series of power outages early this morning now have power restored.

A large-scale outage near the Kansas University campus was reported this morning shortly before 10 a.m., leaving 1,786 people without power. Westar Energy crews restored power by 11:40 a.m. Shane Batchelder, a company spokesperson, said the outage was caused by an equipment failure.

Crews are still working to restore power to the 23 customers affected by a set of “three or four” small outages scattered across Lawrence, Batchelder said. He estimates that the first customers should have power back by around 2:30 p.m., with the last repair scheduled for around 4 p.m.

The cause of the smaller outages is still unknown, though crews have established that they are not related to the larger outage, Batchelder said.
