40 years ago: Headquarters seeks funding for drug education program

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 26, 1974:

  • The Douglas County Commission this week approved $1,000 in matching funds for a Headquarters, Inc. drug education program. The county funds plus local “soft match” money were to match $38,000 in federal money for the experimental program designed to provide education and attitude adjustment for persons arrested for drug violations. There were 16 persons enrolled so far in the program, which was being operated on a volunteer basis until funding could be approved.
  • Speaking in Junction City this week, Kansas Gov. Robert Docking singled out Lawrence as one of four Kansas communities that had achieved economic stability through diversification. “Today, we are seeing diversification in towns such as Manhattan and Lawrence which have been dependent on university payrolls,” Docking said. “No city or town should be entirely dependent upon a single source of income.” The governor also mentioned Wichita and Junction City as cities that had benefited by diversification.
