100 years ago: Downtown merchant has close call with streetcar

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 25, 1914:

  • “Dr. Art Evans, of the Raymond drug store, is mighty glad today to have a hole in his sock and he has shown it with some degree of real satisfaction, because it shows how close he came to having a foot taken off on the street cars. Like many another man has done Evans made a dash for a car and caught it, but as his foot struck the step his ankle turned and he slid under the side of the car. So close did he come to going under the wheels that a piece was pinched out of the side of his sock.”
  • “Memorial services at the Plymouth Congregational church yesterday were attended by the members of the G. A. R. and other patriotic organizations. The church was beautifully decorated with the national colors and flowers of the season. The sermon was preached by Rev. G. Elmer Lindquist [who] made a very eloquent address paying high tribute to the old soldiers. The church was filled to capacity.”
  • “The question is asked, why it was necessary to call the school bond election on such short notice. The answer was that the board felt that if the buildings were to be created they must be about the work. It would not be possible to get these buildings if the work was not started at once. Furthermore there is a demand for labor and this will give a lot of men employment when they need it. The bond proposition is one that all citizens must think quickly upon.”
  • “Tomorrow is good roads day. Lawrence boosters will leave here early in the morning and proceed to Stull where the actual work of improving the roads will begin. The committee requests that you go prepared to work. Some hard labor will be needed and the men in charge are anxious to accomplish as much as possible in the one day. Already the work in the Shawnee county part of the road has been undertaken…. E. O. Perkins saw Governor Hodges yesterday and he promised to try to attend the exercises. The governor will be given the privilege of speaking. Everyone else is to work and not to orate, except at the meal hour. Anything will go during dinner time…. This is to be no holiday for much is to be done and it is hoped that the people of Lawrence will turn out and help to put this road into good condition. Those who do not have spades or shovels will be set to picking rocks out of the road and clearing away brush…. Those who have no way to go should call R. E. Prolsch, who has charge of that part of the arrangements and he will see that you have a way to go, or be at the corner of Massachusetts and Seventh Streets at 7:30 tomorrow morning where the start will be made. Ladies are invited. The ladies of Stull will be present and a number from Lawrence are planning to be present to encourage the men.”
  • “Dr. Raymond A. Schwegler, professor at Kansas university, who has for the past three years has been pastor of the First Congregational church at Ottawa, has tendered his resignation to the local church to take effect June 1. He will spend the summer on a vacation in Wyoming and next fall expects to devote his entire time to university work.”
