Kate Marples, of Lawrence and Dodge City, was among seven Kansas University School of Law graduates honored last week for distinguishing themselves in scholarship, leadership and service to the law school and the community.

Marples received the Samuel Mellinger Scholarship, Leadership and Service Award, given to the graduate who has most distinguished him or herself in the combined areas of scholarship, leadership and service. Among her achievements: She organized a sold-out conference on “Waters of the United States: Adapting Law for Degradation and Drought,” served as the student director of the Paul E. Wilson Project for Innocence and Post-Conviction Remedies, was a member of the Moot Court Council, and volunteered at the Lawrence Homeless Shelter and through Family Promise. She also helped coach the KU Crew team. She maintained an academic ranking in the top 10 percent of her class.
