Lawrence man wins Army ranger competition

A Lawrence man is one of two winners of the U.S. Army’s 31st annual Best Ranger Competition in Fort Benning, Ga., according to the Army’s website.

2nd Lt. John Bergman, 24, of Lawrence, and 2nd Lt. Michael Rose, of Roswell, Ga., won the award. The event will be televised Monday on Fox Sports 1 ( WOW channel 227, DirectTV channel 219, and Dish channel 150). Both soldiers are stationed with the 25th Infantry Division in Schoffield Barracks, Hawaii.

Bergman was the 2012 Distinguished Military Graduate from the Kansas University Army ROTC program and earned a degree in business leadership. He is a 2008 Freestate High School graduate.

Bergman and Rose also won the Capt. Russell B. Rippetoe award, given annually to the team that finishes first in the foot march events, and the Richard A. Leandri award, given to the winner of the orienteering events, according to the Army website

Bergman is the son of Ray and Kathy Bergman, who recently moved from Lawrence to De Soto, Mo.
