25 years ago: Lawrence resident wins lottery prize

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 20, 1989:

  • Lawrence resident Phyllis Lee found herself $30,000 richer this week, thanks to the Kansas Lottery. Lee, who was employed as a machine packaging operator at Hallmark Cards, was awarded her prize during a brief ceremony Friday afternoon at Dillons, 2108 W. 27th, where she had purchased her winning ticket. Lottery director Larry Montgomery said 24 percent of Lee’s winnings would be deducted for federal and state taxes. About a month earlier, the Dillons store at 1740 Massachusetts had sold a lottery ticket to a $50,000 winner.
  • The Class of 1939 of Liberty Memorial High School was invited back to Lawrence for a reunion this coming weekend. Registration and a social hour were to launch the reunion at the Eldridge Hotel.
