Kansas baseball falls, 4-0

? Kansas University baseball finally cooled off.

After stringing together a nine-game conference winning streak and taking the nonconference opener with Michigan, the 22nd-ranked Jayhawks managed just four hits in a 4-0 loss to the Wolverines on Sunday at Ray Fisher Stadium.

Kansas, which won 11 of its last 13 games, finished the regular season 34-22. With a 15-9 Big 12 mark, KU placed third in the league — its highest finish in the Big 12’s 18 years — and will open the Big 12 tournament at 9 a.m. Wednesday against sixth-seeded West Virginia at the Chickasaw Brickton Ballpark in Oklahoma City.

Against Michigan (28-27-1), Kansas failed to get to get a runner past second base, and three of its four hits were infield singles.

“I think it was an important two-game series,” KU coach Ritch Price said. “Obviously, we didn’t swing the bats very well either day. The greatest thing that has happened here is we got a chance to play two days. We picked up a ‘W’ yesterday. I’m disappointed in the outcome of the game today, but from a bigger-picture standpoint, this sets us up for what’s most important — being prepared to play Wednesday of next week.”

Kansas split up the first seven innings by design between junior right-hander Robert Kahana (4-6) and freshman righty Jon Hander.

Kahana was tagged for three runs in the third. Hander surrendered a single run in the seventh.

“I thought Robert got off to a good start, then his command and timing wasn’t as sharp,” Price said. “It was good to see the freshman go out and put zeroes up and start to make some progress.”
