25 years ago: City Commission votes itself a pay increase

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 17, 1989:

The Lawrence City Commission voted itself a 73 percent salary increase at this week’s meeting, voting 4-1 (with Commissioner David Penny against) to increase their annual pay to $3,600. “I don’t think it’s anything outrageous,” said Mayor Bob Schumm of the first salary hike since 1985. “It runs the same with (salaries paid to city council members in) Olathe.” The new annual figure, Schumm said, equated to a $5-per-hour rate for 15 hours of work per week. At that rate, he said, no one would run for commission in order to get rich, but commissioners would be better able to offset the expenses involved in serving the city. Schumm also noted that the new Lawrence pay was still lower than that in Overland Park and Lenexa, where elected officials earned $6,000 and $5,400 respectively, and definitely behind that of the Douglas County Commission, whose members received $15,000 annually. Lawrence School Board members received no monetary compensation for their service.
