40 years ago: Man under police watch at LMH following series of incidents

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 13, 1974:

A 19-year-old man with a North Dakota address was under police guard at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after what a headline today called a Saturday night “spree.” Joseph D. Ensrude had been charged with aggravated robbery, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to yield the right-of-way, and leaving the scene of an accident after a string of incidents which started in the parking lot of the In Sight Tavern on Haskell Avenue. Ensrude, driving a car owned by Daisy Begay, had driven around in circles and then out onto the street and into the path of a car driven by Donald N. Miller. About half an hour later, Ensrude had apparently run a stop light at Seventh and New Hampshire, colliding with another car and then leaving the scene and driving to a home north of Midland, Douglas County Sheriff’s officials reported that Ensrude had entered the Arnold Morgison home where only the four children were at home and had ordered the eldest, who was 14, at gunpoint to bring him all the guns in the house and some ammunition. Taking the keys to the family truck, he had left the house and was found by officials a short time later, after having abandoned the truck in a field near Midland.
