Showers bring nearly one inch of rain to area

A steady downpour Monday brought nearly an inch of rainfall to Lawrence.

Lawrence received 0.91 inches of rain, bringing the month-to-date amount to 1.09 inches. At this point in May, the number would typically be nearly double that, according to meteorologist Matt Wolters of the National Weather Service station in Topeka.

This month’s numbers reflect a yearlong trend of low rainfall, Wolters said. The year-to-date rainfall for Lawrence is almost four inches below normal. To date, the area has received 6.68 inches of rain, a deficit of 3.95 inches.
