Today in Lawrence: 7 ways to spend your weekend
Happy Stop Day! It’s gonna be 75, dry and mostly sunny to start your weekend — perfect to lure you away from studying. Here are seven ways to spend the next few days other than prepping for finals:
1. Tour KU
If you’re a student, the last place you probably want to be is stuck on campus, but the rest of can get a calmer view of Kansas University with Ted Johnson’s campus tour, starting at 9 a.m. at the Natural History Museum, 1345 Jayhawk Blvd.
2. Save Ferris
Do you remember that redheaded ska band from the mid 1990s? Do you even remember ska? (For a while, we actually pretended it was a new kind of music — the kind from Southern California, not the good stuff from Jamaica.) Fast forward 20 years, and it’s all but forgotten. But 1986’s “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is still a classic, and you can catch Matthew Broderick in all his glory at 7 and 9:30 screenings tonight at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St.
3. Get junk
OK, OK, there probably will be a truckload or two of junk at Friday and Saturday’s Annual North Lawrence Neighborhood garage sales, but there’s also bound to be a ton of hidden gold. Follow the pickers across the bridge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and grab the good stuff before it’s gone.
4. Truck it up
Who knows what’s going to happen at the very first Kansas Food Truck Festival, 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday in East Lawrence’s Warehouse Arts District? Our answer: Who cares? You can’t go wrong when you put a bunch of greasy, yummy, fusiony food on wheels and serve it to the masses in a beautiful setting on a Saturday afternoon. Admission: $12. Go forth and food truck!
5. Find that heart of gold
I wanna live, I wanna give, I’ve been a miner for that local hospital benefit. Neil Young famously sang something like that. Well, look no further. The Hearts of Gold Ball for Lawrence Memorial Hospital is happening from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Lawrence Journal-World Press Room, 608 Massachusetts St.
6. See Christina
Singer/songwriter Christina Perrihas 769,000 followers on Twitter, and likely more than a few of those folks live in Lawrence. So you can see why the 27-year-old’s Saturday night show at The Granada is sure to be a sellout. $24 at the door, if you can get in.
7. Celebrate Mom
Here’s hoping you already have plans for Mom on the big day. But if you’ve been slacking, try this one: The Lawrence Community Orchestra will present “A Mother’s Day Concert” at 4 p.m. Sunday at Theatre Lawrence, 4660 Bauer Farm Drive. Tickets: $10 and up.
