Free State swept in softball twinbill

? Despite scoring 15 runs on 30 hits, Free State High’s softball team dropped a doubleheader to Shawnee Mission East on Thursday, 8-5 and 14-10.

Meredith Morris homered twice in the opener for the Firebirds, and Emily Bermel was 6-for-9 for the day with a pair of doubles.

“We had a couple bad innings where we gave up crooked numbers,” Free State coach Lee Ice said.

SM East scored five runs in the third inning in the opener and five runs in the fourth in the nightcap.

The Firebirds (10-8) will play Monday at Lawrence High.
