Royals close out Padres after Monday meltdown

? Alex Gordon singled in the go-ahead run with one out in the 11th inning, and pinch-hitter Billy Butler followed with an RBI double for the Kansas City Royals, who beat San Diego Tuesday night to snap their season-high five-game losing streak.

Eric Hosmer started the winning rally when he hit a leadoff double to center off Nick Vincent (0-1). Gordon singled to right with one out, and Hosmer beat the throw home with a headfirst slide, touching the plate with his left hand.

Butler then doubled in Gordon.

Wade Davis (2-1) pitched two innings of one-hit ball for for the victory, striking out four. Greg Holland, who blew the save Monday night, pitched the 11th for his eighth save in nine chances.

LATE MONDAY NIGHT

Padres 6, Royals 5, 12 innings

It was right there for the taking — twice. The Kansas City Royals just couldn’t close out the game when they had their chances.

Will Venable hit a two-run single in the 12th inning to give the Padres a win over Kansas City early Tuesday morning, giving San Diego its second consecutive victory in its final at-bat.

The Royals held a one-run lead on two occasions late in the game, but couldn’t close it out as they ran their season-high losing streak to five games.

Closer Greg Holland failed to protect a 4-3 lead in the ninth when he allowed Jedd Gyorko’s solo homer.

Venable singled off Tim Collins (0-2) and over the head of right fielder Lorenzo Cain to score Chris Denorfia with the tying run and Yonder Alonso with the winning run from second base.
