LHS baseball’s starting lineup sizzles early in rout

Lawrence High baseball players have been crushing the ball at the plate in their past few games. None of those games compared to the first inning against Shawnee Mission North on Tuesday at LHS.

The Lions had every player in the lineup reach base before recording an out, using a barrage of seven hits to score seven runs.

They cruised afterward in a 13-0, run-shortened rout over the Indians.

In the Lions’ three previous games, they pounded 35 hits and scored at least seven runs in each contest.

“I think in the last three or four games, we’ve definitely been more aggressive at the plate,” senior Kieran Severa said. “Less strikeouts looking and more hard contact, which is what we’re looking for as a team.”

Severa, a Drake University football signee, has been the catalyst for the offense at the top of the order, and he opened Tuesday’s game with a double to left field.

“(Monday against Rockhurst), Kieran starts off with a base hit; today he leads off the game with a double, and we keep rolling from there,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said. “He’s done a really nice job of setting the table and been a great leadoff for us.”

Facing a soft-throwing right-hander, Drew Green, Parker Kirkpatrick, Jacob Seratte, Alex Smith-Gauna and Brad Kincaid each had RBI base hits in the first inning.

“There wasn’t a lot of velocity behind it, and from what we saw (Monday), it was getting in there like (batting practice),” said senior Easton Barnes, who hit a two-run, two-out double in the second inning.

The Lions (9-8) faced a slow-throwing pitcher earlier this year against Olathe North and couldn’t do much against him in a loss.

“I think this game, in a similar situation, we were really looking forward to staying focused and making sure that didn’t happen again,” Severa said. “I think that was the general consensus of the entire team, and I think that led to a lot of success.”

Meanwhile, senior Brandon Bell controlled the tempo on the mound, striking out five in five innings. Bell, who will play at Washburn University next year, overpowered SM North (5-12) with his fastball and slider.

“He looked really good,” Stoll said. “He’s been pretty consistent for the past two years here for us. Whenever he’s throwing, we know we’re going to get a lot of strikes. He pitches fast, he works fast and keeps us in the ballgame. Very effective outing for him.”

In the third inning, Stoll emptied the bench, putting in eight new players. Sophomore catcher Ivan Hollins hit a single and blocked several balls in the dirt behind the plate, and senior Joe Mikesic showed his range at first base.

LHS will play host to Olathe East at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
