40 years ago: Overall tenure not to increase substantially, KU official says

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 7, 1974:

The number of faculty members to be granted tenure this year at Kansas University was likely to increase the total percentage of tenured faculty members by only 1 or 2 percent, according to Executive Vice Chancellor Del Shankel. Shankel said he had received a report on faculty tenure from the University Committee on Promotions and Tenure and would soon send his recommendations to Chancellor Archie Dykes for his approval. The number to be granted tenure, he said, would “not substantially affect the percentage of tenured faculty members.” The slight increase of 1 or 2 percent would keep KU’s tenured faculty at about 70 percent of the total number, he said, adding, “We are being very careful about awarding promotion and tenure.”
