Two events benefiting Just Food and other area agencies are coming to Lawrence May 10.

The first, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, looks to distribute donated, non-perishable food items to organizations that partner with Just Food across Douglas County. The following evening, the Kansas Food Truck Festival will set up shop in Lawrence Warehouse Arts District, with food — and art sales — aplenty.

Jeremy Farmer, the chief executive officer of Just Food, said Lawrence residents should receive a bag in the mail by May 8 with instructions on how to participate in the food drive. Residents are asked to fill the bag with non-perishable food items — preferably whole grain pasta, brown rice, canned fruits, canned tuna or peanut butter, Farmer said.

Donations should then be placed in their mailbox on May 10. The drive, part of a national event, is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, a union for United States Postal Service Workers. Farmer said the Lawrence area donated 25,000 pounds of food last year.

“We’re kind of hoping for things to double this year,” he said. “[The donations go] to agencies all across the community so it’s going to be helpful for us to have a good year.”

He also added that donors should not include a financial contribution to Just Food when mailing their non-perishable items. Farmer said all financial contributions should be made by visiting justfoodfund.org.

Those looking to make a few donations can also donate at the Kansas Food Truck Festival that evening. Farmer said the event runs from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on the festival’s Facebook page for $10. In-person ticket sales the day of the event go for $12 or $10 with a food donation.

The festival will feature several food vendors, as well as artwork for sale.

Farmer said $5 from each ticket sale will go toward Just Food.
