Rockhurst rallies past LHS baseball

? Lawrence High’s baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Rockhurst on Monday, but the Hawklets clawed back to defeat the Lions, 7-6 in eight innings.

LHS scored three runs in the third inning to go up 4-0, but Rockhurst tied with a four-run fourth. The Lions retook the lead twice, but the Hawklets rallied in the bottom of the seventh before winning in the eighth.

The Lions had plenty of opportunities to build a bigger lead, according to LHS coach Brad Stoll, who jokingly said that Lawrence High, “left about 86 guys on base.”

Stoll said the Lions are not about moral victories, but he was pleased to see his team play well against one of the top teams in the region.

“Rockhurst is one of the best teams in the Midwest,” Stoll said. “We went toe-to-toe with them, and even outplayed them most of the game.”

The Lions (8-8) will try to bounce back today against Shawnee Mission North. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at LHS.
