From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 4, 1989:

• A plan was announced at a recent Douglas County Commission meeting to install a sewer system that would accommodate growth west of Lawrence. The plan was initiated to prepare the way for a proposed golf course and housing west of Wakarusa Drive. “Construction of sewers is the first thing they’re waiting for before they move out there,” said Phil Struble, vice president of Landplan Engineering, about the plans of Alvamar Development Corp. for new development in the area.
• Tens of thousands of students pushed through police lines into central Tiananmen Square in Beijing today on the 70th anniversary of China’s first student movement. Thousands also demonstrated in Shanghai and Nanjing for democracy and press freedom.
• In Washington this week, the Bush administration said it was considering prohibiting airline passengers from taking aboard “portable computers, tape players, hair dryers and other electronic devices” as a measure against terrorist bombings.
