FSHS, LHS girls 1-2 at track meet

— Free State’s and Lawrence High’s girls track and field teams finished first and second, respectively, Friday at the Topeka Seaman Relays.

The Firebirds scored 107.5 points, edging the Lions by 27.5 for the team title.

Free State distance runner Bailey Sullivan won the girls 800 and 1,600-meter runs. Gabbi Dabney won the 100 hurdles, Kiara Clark topped the 300 hurdles and Scout Wiebe added a first-place finish in the javelin.

Matia Finley highlighted the meet for Lawrence High by setting the school and meet records in the girls discus with a mark of 155 feet, 8 inches. Finley also won the girls shot with a throw of 38 feet, 10.5 inches.

The Lions also picked up a first-place finish on the track in the girls 4x400-meter relay. The relay team of Leah Gabler, Marissa Pope, Kyleigh Severa and Jensen Edwards won the race with a time of 3:59.88.

The Free State boys team also cracked the top five by scoring 51 points on its way to a fourth-place finish.

Firebird Trevor Hillis improved on his personal record in the boys pole vault by clearing 15 feet, 3 inches.

Lawrence High’s boys squad came in 10th with 30.5 points.
