40 years ago: Lawrence schools consider staggered start times

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 2, 1974:

  • A proposal being considered by the Lawrence school board would institute two different start times for district schools. According to the plan, classes at city elementary schools served by buses — Schwegler, Centennial, Broken Arrow, Cordley, Hillcrest, and Sunset Hill — would start at 9 a.m. instead of 8:30. Starting times at all other district schools would not be affected. The plan was designed to save the district about $24,000 in transportation costs by cutting the number of buses to be rented. The fewer buses could make “double runs,” serving more schools, if the buildings opened for classes at different times. Lawrence area residents surveyed today appeared split on the issue. Those opposed to the idea said it would create problems for working parents and that it probably wouldn’t save much money.
  • Bicycle tags, costing 25 cents each, went on sale this week at the Lawrence Police Station, 745 Vermont. City ordinances stated that the tags were required on all bicycles. Owners of unlicensed bikes could be charged a fine of up to $25.
