Today in Lawrence: Pop-up library, an evening with Naismith

Connect with the life and times of basketball creator James Naismith tonight at the Adams Alumni Center, where his artifacts will be on display.

Library in the park

The Lawrence Public Library is closed through Friday to update its barcode technology, but they’re still serving your book fix. From 6 to 8:30 p.m., head to Watson Park, Seventh and Tennessee streets, for a pop-up library and story time. Books can be checked out throughout the evening. Story time is at 7, and free to attend.

James and the giant reach

From 6 to 8 p.m., you can literally touch basketball history during “An Evening with Naismith: Artifacts of a KU Legend,” at Kansas University’s Adams Alumni Center. Attendees can view and hold artifacts from the KU archive relating to the life and legacy of the sport’s great creator. $10 for alumni association members, $20 general public. The cost includes the exhibit, light appetizers and a cash bar.

Counter culture

And at 7:30, head to the Dole Institute, 2350 Petefish Drive, for counterterrorism expert Amy Herman’s free presentation “Innovation in Plain Sight: Transforming Our National Security Landscape with Museum Collections.” Be prepared to re-evaluate your perception on the role of art and research collections within the intelligence community.
