25 years ago: Topeka Democrats put campaign theme to music

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 1, 1989:

  • In Topeka, House Democrats showed their creative side today as they assembled a rhyme reflecting a theme in their campaign to unseat Republican Gov. Mike Hayden in 1990. After recent legislation to raise the sales tax, motor fuel taxes, and vehicle registration fees, the Democrats distributed these lyrics, to be sung to the tune of “Three Blind Mice:” “Tax Hike Mike. Tax Hike Mike. Never met a tax he didn’t like. He taxes the farmers and farmers’ wives; he taxes the dogs and the cats and the mice; if he can’t tax them once then he taxes them twice. He’s Tax Hike Mike.” Other verses included: “He gives to the rich and he taxes the poor; for a highway to nowhere he taxes us more; when taxpayers protest he closes the door; he’s Tax Hike Mike.”
  • In Washington, Rep. Dan Glickman, D-Kan., proposed broad legislation today to provide federal assistance payments to farmers for damages to this year’s wheat, feed grains, and soybean crops from continuing drought. The Wichita Democrat had also mapped out a timetable for quick advancement of the legislation.
  • In national news, all three of the leading credit card companies — Visa, Mastercard, and American Express — were holding talks with fast food companies about introducing credit-card payments in fast food restaurants nationwide. The concept was being tested at several fast-food operations such as Arby’s, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Domino’s Pizza.
