25 years ago: Health officials fight against Lawrence measles outbreak

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 30, 1989:

Health officials were preparing to re-immunize 660 students at Lawrence High School after a case of measles had been reported there. Eight cases of measles had been confirmed in Douglas County since January 1, with an additional 10 probable cases reported, according to Kay Kent, administrator and health officer for the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department. Seven of the eight confirmed cases were Baldwin High School students and one at Kansas University. Although the case at LHS had not yet been confirmed by blood tests, Kent said the student had been “epidemiologically linked” to a confirmed case. The health department was recommending all LHS students who had been immunized for measles before 15 months of age be re-immunized. Re-immunization programs has already been carried out in Perry-Lecompton, DeSoto, and Topeka.
