Head-shaving fundraiser to benefit Lawrence high schooler diagnosed with cancer

Free State High School students have organized a fundraiser to benefit classmate Madison Bruhns, a freshman who was recently diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

The “Shaving Heads for Madison” fundraiser will be Monday from 2 p.m. to close at the new Sports Clips, 4701 Bauer Farm Drive, across from the high school.

Attendees can get their heads shaved for a minimum $5 donation; those who don’t want to get their hair cut can just give money. An anonymous donor is going to match the funds raised up to $500.

“We want to make Madison feel loved, to let her know that everyone at Free State is thinking about her, whether she’s there or not,” said Free State sophomore Garrett Swisher, who is one of the event’s organizers. “Here at Free State, she is cared for.”

Students have previously sold T-shirts and bracelets to help pay for Bruhns’ treatment.

“After this, Madison can look around Free State and see hundreds of guys with shaved heads and think, They’re with me and they’re going to help me through this,” said Free State sophomore Dallas Hunt, another event organizer.
