25 years ago: Local business plans addition to Lawrence plant

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 26, 1989:

  • Orthopedic Casting Labs announced this week plans to build a 6,480-square-foot addition to its manufacturing plant at 710 E. 22nd. OCL founder Leo Lauber said the additional space had become necessary when the company had recently purchased Antac, a firm which produced a shoe liner called Soft Sole. Lauber, who was also the developer of Eudora’s Intech Business Park, said he had chosen to build the additional space in Lawrence rather than at Intech because OCL needed only an addition and not an entire building. However, his future plans for the company included the eventual construction of a second building at Intech. “When we get ready to build in the park, we’ll move the whole operation out here,” Lauber said.
  • A Kansas University student had suffered severe head injuries in a fall earlier this week at the KU Art and Design Building. James Skinner, a junior industrial design major from Overland Park, had been rappelling down the main stairwell of the Art and Design building with a friend when he had plummeted 30 feet to the ground-level landing. Skinner remained in critical condition at KU Med.
