This week marks the first one of spring, which means you should be preparing your wardrobe for warmer temperatures and (hopefully) sunny skies. Trends can be tricky when you’re shopping for the new season’s trends because some disappear, some stay relevant for a many years, and others last a hot minute. My advice is to not get too stressed over trying to sport the best trends for the season, but to find ones that you’re comfortable with, and there’s a strong possibility you might even have pieces in your closet that you can use.

Wearing white

White is one of those spring and summer trends that keeps coming back in new ways. There are so many ways you can style white this season, from pairing a white top with a white skirt, to going for an all-in-one piece, to adding hints of white to your look with accessories.

Elizabeth and I both chose to style two delicate lace and crochet white dresses. We purposely stayed with the head-to-toe neutral look. I think I speak for the both of us when I say I used to shy away from white because I thought it washed out my skin tone, but after seeing models on the runways and celebrities on the red carpet sport this look, I began to embrace my pale skin.

A light jacket is essential for spring. Whether it’s a basic trench coat or a classic jean jacket, there’s always a need for one to throw on over your dresses. We both threw on some nude and tan sandals to complete this delicate white look.

Getting sporty

My sporty outfits literally used to be workout wear. Looking back, I totally had that all wrong. Save the yoga pants for an actual workout or for a quick errand. When referring to fashion, the term sporty doesn’t mean you’ll be getting dress to go work out, but simply giving your look a sporty flair. Look for pieces like raglan T-shirts, jogger pants (not for jogging), and sneakers like Nike, Converse or wedge sneakers.

J Crew has created this genius combination of a raglan T-shirt with a jeweled neckline. Elizabeth paired it with skinny jeans and Converse sneakers for a sporty-chic look. A raglan T-shirt like this could be paired with shorts or a skirt as well.

Bold and bright

Bright colors and prints are everywhere this spring. I recently picked up an oversized, lightweight sweater from J. Crew that I thought would be perfect for this season. It’s a bright-orange color and super-soft fabric. I styled it with my white skinny jeans, a statement necklace and strappy tan heels. I purposely created a contrast between the white jeans and the bold top to really make the orange color pop. Statement necklaces are also a great option for accessorizing this season.

The maxi

The maxi dress and skirt is a prime example of a trend that has yet to go away. We’ve seen it season after season. We’ll have to admit that it’s one of our favorites because it’s a trend that looks good on anyone at any age. I still have a striped maxi dress that I bought years ago and wear each spring and summer. But if you’re going out to buy a new one, look for a bright or pastel color for the perfect spring maxi. I layered a chambray shirt over my maxi dress and tied it up at the waistline, and accessorized with a metallic tote bag and my cute Chihuahua, Waffles.
