From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 20, 1974:

• The Lawrence City Commission this week continued to back a rezoning request at Fourth and Florida to allow a medical arts office building. Commissioner Barkley Clark said a new building to replace an existing nursing home would not be deleterious to the mostly-residential neighborhood. Immediate neighbors of the 1.4-acre site had indicated approval of the rezoning by signing a petition, but neighbors from two blocks away were present at the meeting urging deferral. In other business, commissioners discussed the hiring of a second animal control officer for the city. Citing many citizen complaints, commissioners said they were eager for a second officer to be hired and begin work. Commissioner Jack Rose suggested a special summer dog round-up also be initiated, using part-time employees, and Commissioner Fred Pence asked whether a bounty system could be arranged.
• Arrangements were being made to give the Kansas University men’s basketball team a rousing sendoff to the NCAA finals in Greensboro, North Carolina. Don Baker, sports information director, said the band and pompon girls, plus interested fans, would gather in front of Jayhawker Towers to cheer the Jayhawks upon their departure for the tournament.
