Colorado man pleads guilty to Lawrence bank robbery

A 37-year-old Colorado man pleaded guilty today to a bank robbery that occurred in Lawrence in September, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom’s office.

In his plea, Matthew W. Headley, of Canon City, Colo., admitted entering US Bank, 1807 W. 23rd St., on Sept. 5, 2013 and handing a teller a note that said “100s and 50s now,” according to the U.S. attorney’s statement. Officers with the Lawrence Police Department were dispatched to the scene and arrested Headley at a nearby convenience store.

Sentencing is set for June 9. The defense and prosecution have agreed to recommend a 24-month sentence in a federal prison, the statement said.

Headley has a record as an armed robbery in Lawrence. In 1998, he pleaded guilty to robbing Taco John’s, at 1101 W. Sixth, and a local liquor store. He was released from a federal prison in 2007.
