40 years ago: District court employee must bring baby goat to work

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 13, 1974:

  • Valerie Uhrich, a clerk in the Douglas County District Court Clerk’s office, was featured in a front-page photo today as she fed a baby goat from a bottle. The goat had been orphaned shortly after its birth the previous week and now needed to accompany Uhrich to work every day, because there was no one at her Oskaloosa home during the day to feed the animal its several necessary bottles.
  • The Lawrence City Commission this week approved this year’s revenue-sharing allocations of $561,574. Included in the funding was the proposed construction of a new city vehicle maintenance garage, a $600,000 project that had been under discussion for months. No site had yet been selected, but members of the East Lawrence Improvement Association attending the commission meeting urged selection of an East Lawrence site.
