25 years ago: Fundraising to begin for Lied Center construction

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 13, 1989:

The Kansas University Endowment Association was planning an appeal to Lawrence residents to raise an additional $3 million to help build a new performing arts center at KU. The local drive, called “Campaign Lawrence,” was to supplement the $10 million donation from Christina Hixson, trustee of the Lied Foundation of Omaha, Nebraska, to build the center. “The Lied Center will benefit the Lawrence community as well as the university,” said KU Chancellor Gene Budig this week in a prepared statement. “It will solve the long-standing problems of adequate performance space for the university. It will also further enhance Lawrence’s reputation for fostering the performing arts.” The $13 million Lied Center was scheduled to be up and running by 1992 and was to be located on a 20-acre site southwest of 15th and Iowa streets.
