A 51-year-old Lawrence man was arrested early Monday morning after confessing to stabbing a friend near Burcham Park on Sunday night, according to Lawrence police.
Kevin Ross McRoberts, 51, was booked into Douglas County Jail at 12:53 a.m. Monday on one count of aggravated battery.
Police were dispatched to Lawrence Memorial Hospital at 9:30 p.m. Sunday to reports of a man telling LMH staff members that he had just stabbed someone, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, Lawrence Police spokesman.
“Officers met with the man, who stated he had stabbed a friend several times while the two were at his friend’s campsite near Burcham Park,” McKinley said.
McRoberts had difficulty describing the location of the campsite, McKinley said, so numerous officers were sent to Burcham Park, South Powerhouse Road, to scour the area. After what McKinley called an “exhaustive search,” officers located the victim inside a tent located near railroad tracks north of the park entrance.
Emergency responders reported that the victim was unconscious and had injuries consistent with having been cut or stabbed with a knife, McKinley said.
“Due to the remote location and darkness, officers assisted the individual out of the wooded area a significant distance to a location where he could be tended to by paramedics,” McKinley said.
The victim, a 34-year-old Lawrence man, was transported to LMH. McKinley said his injuries were not life-threatening.
