25 years ago: Elks Lodge robbed by knife-wielding man

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 9, 1989:

  • Lawrence police this morning were seeking a man who had reportedly escaped with a large amount of cash from the Elks Lodge, 3705 W. 23rd, after having forced the manager at knifepoint to open the lodge’s safe. The manager said that the robbery had occurred at closing time, 10:30 p.m., after he had locked up and was headed to his car. A man wearing a blue bandanna over his face and carrying a machete had forced the manager back to the building. The suspect had taken two money bags and an undetermined number of rolls of quarters before forcing the manager to lie on the floor while making his getaway.
  • Kansas University’s Student Senate this week set in motion a plan to give away thousands of condoms and AIDS brochures during “Condom Sense Week” in late April. “There is a perception among people on this campus that ‘I shouldn’t worry about AIDS,’ said Jane Hutchinson, Senate member and co-sponsor of the bill. Education was the best way to counter misinformation about AIDS, she said.
