Police investigate whether impairment caused K-10 injury collision Thursday

Lawrence police are investigating whether a Kansas City, Kan., man was impaired when he caused a two-car injury accident on Kansas Highway 10 on Thursday.

Police say Verlondon Harris II, 51, of Kansas City, Kan., was crossing the westbound lanes of K-10 while trying to enter East Hills Business Park when he failed to yield to a second vehicle, causing a collision.

Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman, said Harris was injured in the crash and that Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical took Harris to a Kansas City-area trauma center. McKinley said officers on the scene suspected impairment and an investigating officer went to the hospital with Harris for a blood draw. McKinley said results of the test, and any related citations, are pending.

McKinley said the second driver, Karey Shepard, 42, of Lawrence, suffered a possible injury following the accident, which occurred just before 6 p.m. Thursday, but was not taken to a hospital.
