Farm workshop series on tap for April start in Douglas County

A four-part workshop series from the Kansas Rural Center focusing on building and using plastic-covered tunnels to enhance crop production and extend growing seasons will begin on a farm just north of Lawrence next month.

The “Tunnel to Table” workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 5 at Juniper Hill Farms in northern Douglas County. Beginning and advanced techniques for using high and low tunnels to increase farm profitability will be featured.

Registration is $15 and includes lunch. The workshop also includes networking opportunities, an afternoon high-tunnel tour and a low-tunnel construction demonstration with Juniper Hill Farms’ owner Scott Thellman. Thellman will share crop-planning strategies and financial analysis in a roundtable discussion.

The “Tunnel to Table” program will continue with three more stops in 2014: Atwood and Winfield in September and Clay Center in October.

More registration and event details can be found by visiting kansasruralcenter.org or contacting the center’s program coordinator, Cole Cottin, at 785-992-4572 or ccottin@kansasruralcenter.org.
