25 years ago: Lawrence in line for possible late-season snowstorm

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 3, 1989:

  • Lawrence was looking at the possibility of the biggest winter storm of the season this week. “If it does pan out, it definitely could be a whopper,” said Ed Levy, forecaster with the Kansas University weather service. Levy said the Lawrence area could possibly experience “near-blizzard” conditions the coming weekend, with northwest winds of 22 to 35 miles per hour and possible snow accumulations of 6 to 8 inches.
  • A 21-year-old city employee was being held without bond for allegedly threatening his supervisor James Engnehl as well as City Manager Buford Watson. A police spokesman said the man allegedly had threatened to put a pipe bomb in his supervisor’s car and had also made threats against Watson in the hearing of his co-workers. Police had confiscated several lengths of pipe and other evidence from the man’s rural Douglas County home.
