40 years ago: Annual bicycle sale nets over $1,000 for police pension fund

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 30, 1974:

  • The Lawrence Police Department’s semi-annual bicycle sale, held on a recent Saturday, had netted $1,388 for 50 bicycles and five lots of bicycle parts. One bicycle had sold for $80, the highest selling price of the group, according to Sgt. Miguel Garcia Jr. The least expensive bike had sold for $5 and two for $6; the average selling price was about $25. Proceeds from the sale went into the police pension fund. The bicycles for sale were those held longer than six months at the police station after having been stolen and recovered or abandoned and unclaimed.
  • A loss of $850 was reported in an overnight break-in at an East Lawrence home. Lawrence police said today. A television and stereo equipment were taken, with entry made through a window. Two weekend break-ins were also reported today, one at the Chamber of Commerce offices, 901 Tennessee, where a window had been forced and a petty cash box containing about $17.50 taken. The Lawrence City Garage also reported its office ransacked after someone had entered through an unlocked overhead door, police said. A soft drink machine at the garage had been unlocked with keys found in the office, and an undetermined amount of money taken. The tool rooms had also been opened, but employees and police were still in the process of determining whether any tools had been stolen.
