Soccer fans gather downtown to watch US play Germany

As players began talking the field for the US-Germany World Cup match, the capacity crowd in the Red Lyon Tavern echoed the chant that has followed the team through the tournament in Brazil.

“I believe that we will in, I believe that we will win, I believe that we will win.”

More than 100 people came to the Massachusetts Street bar this morning to watch the game, cheer the U.S. team and drink beer in the late morning. The outcome of the match helped determined whether the U.S. advanced into the next stage of the cup.

“Soccer is getting way big,” said Andrew Fyler, who works at the Sandbar and came to the Red Lyon with friends to watch the game.

A lifelong soccer fan, Fyler notes that there seem to be a lot more fellow fans during World Cup season. Still, he said he was “glad people are finally paying attention.”

Fyler wasn’t the only longtime fan in the crowd, though. Brent and Lisa Flanders said their family became fans after their son, Colin, started playing early in life.

Colin Flanders showed up at 9:30 a.m. to make he, his parents and his brother, Camron, could get a table when the Red Lyon opened at 10 a.m.

His hopes were high for the game with Germany. “I think they’ll tie or win,” he said. “It’s definitely a winnable game.”

The United States lost, 1-0, but advanced from its group into the round of 16 because Portugal defeated Ghana, 2-1, in a game played simultaneously. The Americans will play Belgium, or possibly Algeria, Tuesday.
