$100,000 bond set for woman arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder

District Judge James T. George set a $100,000 cash or surety bond Wednesday for a woman arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder after a stabbing Monday.

Appearing by teleconference from the Douglas County Jail, Shelly Michelle Hammer, 39, made her first appearance in court Wednesday. Hammer is accused of repeatedly stabbing a 26-year-old woman from behind with a pair of small scissors Monday evening. The two had been drinking together and arguing throughout the night before riding in a vehicle together, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Trent McKinley said Tuesday,

McKinley said the victim told investigators Hammer was sitting in the seat behind her when they started arguing again in the vehicle. The victim then told Hammer to get out of the vehicle, at which point Hammer began stabbing the victim in the neck and face, McKinley said.

Assistant Douglas County District Attorney Deborah Moody asked George to set bond at $100,000 due to four counts of failure to appear in Hammer’s criminal history, two ongoing cases of failure to pay penalties in Jefferson County and the fact that she is not a local resident. Hammer was staying at the Lawrence Community Shelter prior to her arrest, Moody said.

Hammer’s next court proceeding will be a no-go preliminary hearing Thursday.
