40 years ago: Lawrence voters to decide on school referendum

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 25, 1974:

  • Voters in Lawrence School District 497 were heading to the polls this week to decide on a three-part referendum package. The district was asking the public to approve an estimated 1.86-mill ($1.86 per $1,000 assessed valuation) increase in the district tax levy to fund a 3.16 percent average increase for school personnel beyond seven percent. Also involved was expansion of the special education program. The district also was asking for the authority to transfer 1 1/2 mills from the existing vocational fund into the general fund, where it would bring in $56,250 in state aid.
  • The Kansas Board of Regents today began a formal review of requests for Fiscal Year 1976 budgets from the six state colleges and universities. Kansas University was asking $61.3 million for operations at the Lawrence campus, an increase of 16.03 percent over the budget KU was to be operating under beginning July 1. KU was asking a 10 percent increase in funds for faculty salaries, individual salary increases for classified workers, and an increase of 37.5 percent in money for student employees to reflect increases in the minimum wage.
