40 years ago: City commission to discuss sign ordinance

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 24, 1974:

  • City commissioners were expected to set staff to work on a new sign ordinance this week. At their upcoming meeting, Commissioners Nancy Hambleton and Barkley Clark were planning to urge revision of the sign ordinance to include staged removal of nonconforming signs, particularly blinking neon signs. Hambleton said she would also ask that the present prohibition against wall signs below eight feet from the ground be reviewed to handle situations where no danger was created by a lower sign. Also on the commission’s agenda was a discussion of a recommended widening of 11th Street on the south side from New Hampshire to Rhode Island in conjunction with the construction of the joint city-county judicial complex. Another discussion item was a proposal for purchasing about $10,000 worth of new furniture and equipment for the Community Building.
  • Meanwhile, the Douglas County Commission was planning to apply to the Governor’s Committee on Criminal Administration for a $125,000 grant to furnish some court space in the judicial law enforcement building. The grant would consist of $118,750 in state and federal funds and $6,350 in local matching money. Bids for the new building construction were to be taken July 31; the building cost was estimated at $3.8 million.
