Ex-Baker WR headed to CFL

Former Baker University wide receiver Kyle Bolton will continue his football career north of the border after signing Wednesday with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

Bolton racked up more than 1,100 career receiving yards from 2009-2012 with the Wildcats, but he anticipates being a multi-dimensional player for Winnipeg.

“This team is built for people kind of like me, and so is our league,” Bolton said. “They gave me the opportunity to play running back, slot and kick return, which will be great for me, and I’ll have a lot of fun with it with the Bombers.”

Since graduating from Baker in December of 2012, Bolton has worked toward playing professionally by working out for NFL and CFL teams and also drew rave reviews as one of the receivers for Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel’s pro day.

“The Johnny Manziel thing helped out because obviously it got my named published with the USA Today, and I was on ESPN,” Bolton said. “All of these coaches go and look at that film and see what I could do.”

Bolton also credited Baker offensive coordinator Miguel Regalado and head coach Mike Grossner for how they utilized him to make him a threat in the slot and out of the backfield.

“With coach ‘Reg,’ to have that opportunity was a blessing,” Bolton said. “It was difficult at times. He was yelling at me about not knowing everything, but him pushing me to play both has actually helped so much.”

Bolton has worked out with the Bombers’ practice squad since signing, but has received encouraging news from the coaching staff this week.

“I’ve only been here two days, but they are giving me all the opportunities I can once I get the plays down to come up and become a starter,” Bolton said.

The Blue Bombers’ regular season opener is scheduled for Thursday against the Toronto Argonauts.
