Raiders ride unorthodox offense to wins

As the saying goes, sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

For the Lawrence Raiders, they didn’t beat themselves and that was good enough to win two games on Tuesday at Kansas University’s Hoglund Ballpark.

Despite being out-hit in both games, the Raiders beat the Midwest Orioles, 4-2, in the morning, and routed BC-Halter, 10-2, in the afternoon. The second victory was shortened to six innings because of the mercy rule.

The Raiders didn’t have any extra base hits in either game, and in the win over the Orioles, they didn’t have any RBIs. Every run was scored through an error, passed ball or wild pitch.

“I told the guys it’s still probably not the cleanest baseball — the baseball that the two high school programs here are used to,” Raiders coach Brad Romme said. “But right now we’re just trying to find our way and any win is big for us.

“There’s a lot of good things (we did) but we still can play better, though.”

After trailing 2-0 to BC, the Raiders (5-7) tied the game in the second inning by scoring two runs without a hit. They drew three walks, were hit by three pitches and took advantage of two wild pitches.

In a three-run third inning, the first five batters reached bases through a hit batter and four walks. Nate Hulse also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The first two batters in the fourth inning also reached on walks, before Jacob Seratte drilled a two-run single up the middle in a nine-pitch at-bat.

“I actually saw it pretty well,” Seratte said of his hit against a left-handed pitcher. “The curveball threw me off a little bit. It was breaking different than a normal right-hander, obviously. I saw him pretty well so I was happy with that.”

Seratte scored after the next hitter, Bowen Cunningham, hit a single to left. Cunningham eventually scored on a groundout.

Cunningham picked up a baseball for the first time Tuesday since playing in the Class 4A-II state championship game with Perry-Lecompton. He missed the first 10 summer games because of a case of mono.

Seratte, who also re-joined the team Tuesday, drilled a ball off the third baseman’s glove into the outfield in the sixth inning, which moved Zach Bickling to the other corner of the diamond before scoring the game’s final run on a single from Briggs Fish.

“I was pretty satisfied, especially with those last two at-bats,” Seratte said. “I fouled off some pitches and ended up putting some solid contact on the ball. After the time off, I’m happy with that.”

The Raiders will face BC-2 at 3:45 p.m. today at Hoglund Ballpark.
