40 years ago: Lawrence man claims Watergate influence in tax fraud

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 18, 1974:

  • In Kansas City, a Lawrence man was sentenced to a year and a day in prison today on a charge of filing a fraudulent federal tax return for 1972. Daniel R. Hedman, 25, a student at Kansas University, had pleaded guilty May 13 to a charge of filing a false tax return claiming a $28,500 refund under a fictitious name. Hedman told Judge Earl E. O’Connor of the U.S. District Court that he had conceived the plan “at the time of Watergate when I was thinking of the piracy that the IRS commits.”
  • The August 6 primary election in Douglas County was possibly going to be a mere formality this year. With the filing deadline only three days away, it appeared neither the Republicans nor the Democrats were to have opposition for any party nominations.
