25 years ago: City commissioners glad to have meetings curtailed

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 17, 1989:

  • Lawrence city commissioners were happy with the outcome of the rules, passed eight weeks earlier, designed to keep their Tuesday night meetings stretching out into the wee hours of Wednesday morning. However, the 10:30 adjournment requirement was a disappointment to some members of the public who sometimes had to go home from the meetings without having spoken their piece about a particular issue. The new rules included provisions to begin meetings at 6:35 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. and to end public debate of issues at 10 p.m., reserving the final half hour for wrap-up work. Public discussion of any single item was limited to one hour, except when extended by a super-majority (four out of five commissioners).
  • The first load of Douglas County’s wheat harvest arrived this week at the Farmer’s Co-op north elevator, more than a week before the usual start of the local harvest. Pat Ross of the Nunemaker-Ross Farms northeast of Lawrence delivered the wheat. Sarah Leonhard, scale operator, said the load was top quality grain with its test weight measuring 62 pounds per bushel and a moisture content of 11 1/2 percent. The average test weight for Kansas wheat was 60 pounds a bushel, and all wheat with a moisture content of 13 1/2 percent and lower was considered good, she said.
